Bridgette Bardot was a favorite star of
The Beatles. John and Paul have said that they wanted their signifigant
others to look like her so they encouraged Cynthia and Dot (one of Paul's
girlfriends in the early days) to dye their hair, wear mini-skirts, and
tight sweaters. Bridgette was origionally included in the design for the
cover of Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album. She does
not appear on the final album sleeve, however.
Over 57 artists have recorded
cover versions of the song, Yesterday, including Don Ho, Anita Bryant,
and the Smothers Brothers.
In many videos and pictures
surrounding the time of the Rain video, Paul appears with a noticeably
chipped tooth. Although this was explained by the p.r. people as
a moped accident near his Dad's house, there has been much speculation
that Paul was involved in a scuffle with John which resulted in the damage.
The Beatles embedded numberous
Beatles references in their video "Free As A Bird". Here are some
to look for:
1. The sound of wings flapping refers to many Beatles songs..."And
Your Bird Can Sing","Blue Jay Way", "Blackbird", etc.
2. Photographs seen in the room refer to "In My Life", "A Day
In The Lilfe", etc.
3. A kite in the corner refers to "Being For The Benefit of Mr.
Kite"
4. Beatles as children in pictures on the mantelpiece refer to
"Little Child".
5. The coffee mug refers to "A Day In The Life" where Paul wrote
"drank a cup" or if the picture on the mug is John's mug (as it appears),
it refers to the song, Julia.
6. The sailor statue and the model ship refer to John's father,
Freddie, a merchant seaman. Sopngs reffering to these figures could
be "Honey Pie" or "All Together Now" or "Yellow Submarine" which all mention
sailing.
7.The clock on the mantel has hands that look like they show 7:40 at
regular speed, however when played at slow motion, 1 frame at a time, the
hands appear to read 11:13, the exact time of John Lennon's death.
The way the shapes merge in slow motion looks like a body with arms out
like a cross reminding one of the line in John's Ballad of John and Yoko,
"they're gonna crucify me."
8. The silver beetle on the mantel is a reference to the name
of the group in the early days.
9. The "silver" sign on the building above the eggman's truck
is the "Silver Hammer Hardware" sign--a reference to "Maxwell's Silver
Hammer."
10. Two cakes are in the bakery window--one is a birthday cake
with the number 64 on it--referring to "When I'm 64". The other is
a wedding cake referring to Eleanor Rigby.
There are over one hundred
references in "Free As A Bird" video which refer to specific Beatles songs.
At the end of "Free As A Bird"
video, John is heard saying the words, "Made by John Lennon" which, when
played backwards, are heard as "turned out nice again, didn't it?"
The song, "Yesterday" which
came to Paul in a dream, was never released as a single in the U.K. because
the band was embarrassed. It didn't seem right for such a lush and
sentimental ballad to come out of a rock and roll band.
On the album, "Abbey Road",
Paul wanted to connect all the songs with some sort of sound or music and
have just one long song, but John disagreed. John wanted the songs
separated by traditional bands of silence. They compromised by having
one side John's way and the other side Paul's way. Ringo recently
stated that he liked the way Paul's side turned out which ends with "The
End."
Insightful quote from Paul,
April, 1970:
"No matter how much we split, we're still very linked. We're
the only four people who've seen the whole Beatlemania bit from the inside
out, so we're tied together forever, whatever happens.
Grammy Lifetime Achievement
Awards among the Beatles camp:
1990 Paul McCartney
1991 John Lennon
1995 George Martin
In the January 1981 issue of
Playboy, there was a lengthy, in-depth interview with John and Yoko.
In the same issue, there was another Beatles link. The cover and
a steamy nude pictorial featured Barbara Bach (Mrs. Ringo Starr).
Zak Starkey only received one
drumming lesson from his Dad (at aged 10). Both he and his Dad have
stated that the only advice Ringo ever gave his son was to drum with as
many people as he could.
The McCartney family is vegetarian
which means they eat no form of meat. Paul and Linda's son, James
is vegan, which means he eats no animal products at all (which includes
no dairy products or eggs).
Paul and John first had their
hair cut and shaped like The Beatles moptop when they hitchhiked to Paris
to celebrate John's 21st birthday.
Paul played bass guitar on
James Taylor's recording of "Carolina In My Mind". This was James
Taylor's only Apple records release.
On June 23, 1984, Sotheby's

The individual Beatles have
been on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine:
John Lennon 15 times

George Harrison 4 times
Ringo Starr 1 time
George Harrison stated in the
March 1997 issue of Guitar World that he likes "Back on the Chain Gang"
from the Learning to Crawl album by the Pretenders. He said he likes
it because this song has one specific chord, a combination he describes
as the "frustration" chord: an E7 with an F on top. He remembers
that he invented the chord for his song, "I Want To Tell You" on the Revolver
album. He said The Pretenders are the only group he's come across
who "borrowed" it for their song. George also likes "Remedy" by The
Black Crowes. He said his son Dhani has been influencing him quite
a bit lately and turned him on to the Black Crowes' music.
Penny Lane backed by Strawberry
Fields (a double-A-side) was kept from being number one on the charts by
Engelbert Humperdinck singing "Release Me!". Penny Lane/Strawberry
Fields was the 13th release and the first one of The Beatles not to make
it to #1.
John Lennon bought a Rolls-Royce
and had it painted matt black including the chrome.
Brian Epstein had a black chef
named Lonnie Trimball whose cuisine was called "first class" by George
Martin.
Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders
was a very good friend of Linda McCartney. She has said that she
never saw Linda without a camera in her hand. Paul replied that he
had...in bed.
The green apple (Granny Smith)
picture which is the symbol of Apple was patterned after an apple in a
Magritte painting that Paul had bought.
The Beatles insisted upon a
fancy-dress party to mark the opening of their film Magical Mystery Tour.
George Martin and his new wife came as the Queen and Prince Philip.
When George Martin was trying
to decide how to present The Beatles, he went to the Cavern where they
were playing to teenagers. He was shocked to see that the walls were
streaming with condensation and was amazed that the boys didn't get electrocuted.
He said it was like "dungeon".
At a press conference in Genoa,
Italy, George was asked if he had been swimming in the Mediterranean in
the buff. "Me swim naked?" George replied. "I'm always at least
covered in goose pimples."
Cynthia Lennon, Maureen Starkey,
and Patti Boyd (later Harrison) were on the set of Help! but were careful
not to be seen on camera due to the boys' mock bachelor image.
When Ringo was having his tonsils
taken out, he was replaced on tour by Jimmy Nicol. Jimmy was paid
250 pounds a week and received an inscribed gold watch before returning
to virtual obscurity. He wore Ringo's suits which clearly didn't
fit him very well. That wasn't the only thing that was uncomfortable
for Jimmy. Paul has said that after each gig, they would all ask
him if he was getting used to the noise and the crowd, and he would say,
"it's getting better." Paul said that was part of the inspiration
for the song of the same name.
